The loss of a pet to death, whether expected or unexpected is as painful for many as losing a family member. In fact some pet owners especially those living alone with a pet find the experience painful and need closure just like it were a person.

A good way of getting closure after the death of a pet is to have the pet given a fitting send off. While some are content to bury and get over it, a little more thought needs to go to a deserving pet.  Cremation is a good way to send off a pet especially for those who do not have a burial ground, for example if you live in an apartment in the city.

Removal

When a pet dies, most pet owners are at a loss on how to handle the carcass. The best bet is to call animal services department to advice on the matter. The pet has to be cleared for infectious diseases. Alternatively a removal service can be contacted. Large pets like horses will need special lifting equipment. Many pet cremation services will offer removal services as well to take the pet to the crematorium.

 Pet cremation services will offer different packages for different pets according to size.  Companion pets like cats and dogs require less handling needs than bigger pets like horses.

Pet ashes

After cremation, the pet’s ashes are put in an urn for pets and returned to the owner is he/she had chosen this option.  A certificate of cremation is also issued. The pet owner can then decide whether to keep the ashes or scatter them. For many, scattering is a better pet burial option as this feels like one is setting the spirit of the pet free to roam the earth at will.

Scattering the pet’s ashes can be done in several ways;

In the ground – The pet’s ashes are scattered similar to a traditional funeral in the ground of the owner’s choice. You may have to check with the local authorities on the regulations on what locations are allowed.

In the Wind- Simply letting the ashes blow away from the pet urn with the wind and head wherever the wind goes.

Grieving services

If the pet owner feels the grief is too much and needs support, many pet burial services are happy to offer their services to relieve the anguish and loss.  This will bring much needed closure to the loss of a faithful companion.
